Clay: Dermokil's Foundation, Skin's Oldest Friend

Dermokil is a skincare brand that started with the philosophy of "Beauty from Clay" and is recognized as a pioneering brand in Turkey's clay mask category. Clay is not just a raw material for Dermokil; it is the essence, inspiration, and area of expertise for the brand. Used in skincare by ancient Egyptian, Roman, and Ottoman civilizations thousands of years ago, clay is one of the most powerful natural skincare ingredients confirmed today by modern dermatology and cosmetic science. Dermokil combines this deep-rooted tradition with a scientific formulation approach, developing over 60 clay-based products for every skin type, skin concern, and usage habit.

What is Clay and How Does it Work on the Skin?

Clay is a fine-grained, mineral-rich natural substance formed over millions of years through volcanic activity, mineral decomposition, and geological processes. Containing minerals such as silica, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, iron, and potassium, clay's high surface area and negative electrical charge allow it to absorb and remove positively charged toxins, oils, dirt, and bacteria from the skin via electromagnetic attraction. This process is not a chemical reaction but a physical adsorption mechanism — therefore, clay is considered one of the gentlest deep cleansers that purifies the skin without irritation.

When applied to the skin, clay absorbs moisture and begins to dry. During this drying process, excess sebum, dirt, and toxins from within the pores are transferred to the clay's structure. At the same time, clay slightly tightens the skin around the pores, temporarily reducing their appearance. The pH of clay is usually around 8 — this basic structure neutralizes the acidic environment preferred by acne bacteria, inhibiting bacterial growth.

Types of Clay: Each Clay Has Its Own Power

Not all clays are the same. Differences in mineralogy, color, and origin create unique skin effects for each type of clay. Dermokil uses five different types of clay in its formulas:

Pink Clay — The Clay for Sensitive and Combination Skin: Composed of a blend of kaolinite and illite minerals, pink clay is one of the gentlest types of clay. Its mild purifying effect cleanses the skin without causing irritation. It supports blood circulation, revitalizes the skin, and tightens the appearance of pores. It purifies the T-zone of combination skin while protecting the cheek area. Dermokil Detox Effect Pink Clay Mask is the purest formulation of this type.

White Clay (Kaolin) — The Gentlest Clay, Preferred by Sensitive Skin: Kaolin has the lowest abrasive rate among all clay types. It consists almost entirely of pure aluminum silicate. It balances moisture, does not irritate the skin, and can be used safely even on sensitive, redness-prone skin. Dermokil Whitening Effect White Clay Mask is a gentle formula that can be easily incorporated into a weekly skincare routine.

Green Clay (Montmorillonite / Illite) — Powerful Purifier for Oily Skin: Green clay has the strongest adsorption capacity of all clay types. Thanks to its high iron oxide and magnesium mineralogy, it rapidly absorbs excess oil, toxins, and environmental pollutants from the pores. It is an ideal formula for deep pore cleansing, sebum control, and skin surface renewal. It is the most effective clay type for combating excessive oiliness and clogged pores. Dermokil Peeling Effect Green Clay Mask combines this powerful clay type with a peeling effect.

Red Clay (Kaolinite + Iron Oxide) — Balancer for Acne-Prone Skin: This type of clay, which gets its red color from its high iron oxide content, provides a natural balancing effect against bacteria in acne- and blemish-prone skin. It helps reduce inflammation, controls excess oil, and cleanses the skin surface. It also contains iron minerals that contribute to a more even skin tone. Dermokil Anti-Acne and Pimple Red Clay Mask is specially formulated for acne.
